Okoye Breaks NAIA Weight Record; Azusa Pacific Leads Team Standings

Christian Okoye won his eighth career NAIA track event Friday with a meet-record effort in the weight throw to help Azusa Pacific take the lead on the first day of the NAIA Indoor track and field championships.

Okoye, the outstanding performer in the 1986 NAIA outdoor season, threw the 35-pound weight 66 feet 5 inches to retain his title and break the NAIA record by 14 1/2 inches.

Okoye, a 6-foot 3-inch, 250-pound senior, finished second in the shotput to help Azusa Pacific score a 1-2-3 sweep in the event.

After seven events, Azusa Pacific had 54 1/2 points . Wayland Baptist (Tex.), the pre-meet favorite and two-time defending champion, was second with 30 points.
