MANDOLIN CONCERTOS BY PAISIELLO, LECCE, GIULIANI. Ugo Orlandi, first mandolin; Dorina Frati, second mandolin. Claudio Scimone conducting I Solisti Veneti. Erato/RCA Compact Disc, ECD88165. The Neapolitan mandolin is a rich-looking, rich-sounding instrument from the 18th Century that is plucked to produce a rich, full tone. The pity is that few classical composers after Vivaldi wrote much for it--though Beethoven, Schoenberg, Webern and Stravinsky admired its special qualities. This is not just music for the connoisseur of old instruments; it is music that fills the heart with warmth.
