MASTER HUSTON

My only cavil with Rosenfield’s fine profile of John Huston is the reference to Marilyn Monroe, in which he alleged that her favorite film was Huston’s “Asphalt Jungle.”

Not so. She played only a small role in it--Lewis Calhern’s mistress--though she did feel at ease working with Huston. No, I know from conversations with her, that the film above all in which she felt she had stretched herself was “Bus Stop,” from William Inge’s play, directed by Joshua Logan.

Another one of her favorites was Billy Wilder’s “Some Like It Hot.” My personal hunch, based on hints rather than direct statements, is that if she were pushed against the wall and had to pick one favorite role above all--it would have been the girl who wore glasses in “How to Marry a Millionaire.”
