Retired Superior Court Judge James G. Whyte Dies

Retired Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James G. Whyte died Friday at the Beverly Manor Convalescent Hospital in Capistrano Beach. He was 80.

Whyte was presiding judge of the Superior Court Appellate Department in Los Angeles when he retired in 1973, said William Ray, a spokesman for Ray Family Mortuary in San Clemente.

A longtime jurist, Whyte was named to the Claremont Municipal Court bench in 1950. He was appointed to the Superior Court in 1953 by then-Gov. Earl Warren.

Whyte was born Sept. 12, 1906, in Ontario and educated in Pomona schools. He was graduated from Pomona College in 1928 and from Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley in 1932.

Before serving on the bench, Whyte served more than three years as Claremont city attorney. He later was a city judge and justice of the peace for San Jose Township in Los Angeles County.

He is survived by his wife, Marie, two sons and two daughters.

Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at South Shores Baptist Church in Laguna Niguel.
