‘Mrs. Monrovia,’ Cited for Service
Agusta Barnard, who celebrated her 100th birthday Sunday, has been selected by the Monrovia Centennial Committee to receive a Century Recognition Award for Community Service.
It is the latest in a series of awards for Barnard, who has lived here since 1928. Last year the City Council named her “Mrs. Monrovia” for her 59 years of civic activity, and the state Assembly awarded her a certificate recognizing her devotion to her community.
In 1978 she was named distinguished woman by the Monrovia Junior Chamber of Commerce for her service to the city, and in 1975 she was honored as outstanding senior citizen for Monrovia by the county Board of Supervisors. She has been active in the First Baptist Church, Chamber of Commerce, Monrovia Women’s Club, American Legion Auxiliary and Civic Club.
Five children, 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren attended Barnard’s birthday celebration, including son Robert L. Flannes and daughter Marion F. Hutchcroft, both of Monrovia.
