Long Beach : Year-Round School Plan

Share

The school board has adopted specific criteria by which as many as four elementary schools may be converted to year-round operation beginning next fall.

Board members and district officials have expressed support for a year-round plan, which they hope will ease overcrowding by increasing each participating school’s student capacity by about a third.

According to the criteria adopted, the participating schools will share certain characteristics, including a large number of students now being being bused to other schools, a community and staff that is receptive to year-round operation and an enrollment of 600 or more.

According to Chuck Carpenter, deputy superintendent of instruction, the schools meeting those criteria generally fall into an area between Pacific Avenue on the west and Redondo Avenue on the east. Using the adopted criteria as a “guideline,” Carpenter said, district staff would return to the board on March 16 with specific recommendations regarding which schools should be included.
