Los Angeles Police said they have broken up one of the numerous networks that sell cocaine to South-Central street gang members, who in turn peddle the drugs in several Western states.

Five suspects were arrested Wednesday in raids at six locations and 137 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of $23 million, twenty 100-ounce silver bars, $271,000 in cash, two Mercedes-Benz cars and stolen clothing, including 83 men’s suits, were seized.

Police Chief Daryl F. Gates said that a number of local gangs have turned into “significant organized crime units.” With their aura of violence and intimidation and contacts, such gangs are perfectly structured to be drug distribution networks, he said.

The chief said police intelligence indicates that the gangs are selling cocaine throughout California, Oregon, Arizona, Colorado and Louisiana.

Arrested for investigation of possession of cocaine for sale were Hossein Shapouri, Fraamarz Froudi, Dana Gold, Michael W. Porter and Andre Jones.
