A 24-year-old La Jolla woman riding a 10-speed bike was crushed to death beneath the wheels of a semi-trailer truck Thursday near Lindbergh Field.

The victim was identified by the coroner’s office as Amy Johanna Gross, who lived in the 5800 block of Soledad Road in La Jolla. She died in surgery at UCSD Medical Center shortly after the 1:04 p.m. accident, according to San Diego police.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Hancock and Washington streets. According to police and the coroner’s office, Gross and the truck were both stopped for a red light in the northeast-bound lanes of Washington Street.

When the light turned green, the truck began a right turn. Gross attempted to beat the truck but was hit by a fog light on the truck’s fender and knocked down. She was caught under the large double wheels and dragged several yards, police said.

Investigation into the accident is continuing.
