The Boston Red Sox’s Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd screamed obscenities at a reporter who sought to ask Boyd about money the pitcher apparently owed a store for rented videotapes that were not returned.

The Red Sox paid the music store $367.24 to settle the matter, the team confirmed, and a reporter from a Florida newspaper was seeking to question Boyd about the matter when the shouting incident occurred.

Dick Scanlon, a reporter for the Lakeland (Fla.) Ledger, said he approached Boyd in the locker room and asked if he could ask the pitcher a “question that’s not related to sports.”

Said Scanlon: “As soon as I mentioned VCR (video-cassette recorder), he said, ‘That’s all lies. None of that (expletive) happened. That’s why I don’t like to talk to you guys.’ ”
