Johnson Leads by 3 Shots at Torrey Pines
Jim Johnson of Pepperdine shot a five-under-par 67 Friday to take a three-shot lead after the first round of the Men’s Southern California Intercollegiate golf tournament on Torrey Pines’ South Course. The final round will be played today.
Johnson’s round helped Pepperdine to second place in the Division I team tournament. UC Santa Barbara (290) leads Pepperdine by one stroke. Cal State Long Beach (295) is third, San Diego State (298) fifth, the University of San Diego (303) eighth and United States International University (307) ninth.
In the Division II team tournament, Cal State Dominguez Hills (293) leads Cal State Northridge by eight strokes. Point Loma Nazarene College (317) is third.
UC San Diego (297) leads the Division III team tournament by nine shots over Cal State San Bernardino.
Johnson leads Brad Sterling of UCSD and Gary Nichols of UC Irvine. Tied at one-under 71 are Kurt Bilben (Dominguez Hills), Dave Shankland (Long Beach) and Phil Hurlbut (Pepperdine).
