Los Angeles Defended as Being More Big City

Share

In commenting on Cameron Simmons’ assertion that San Francisco is a real city and Los Angeles “is strictly minor league” (Feb. 1), I took it as a challenge to do my own comparison.

I’ve found that Los Angeles is a more diverse city, with many more ethnic cultures (Chinatown, Koreatown, Fairfax neighborhood, etc.). Los Angeles has more cultural institutions (art museums, legitimate theater), and the Los Angeles Philharmonic is among the world’s finest.

Los Angeles has more institutions dedicated to astronomy and science (Griffith Observatory and the museums in Exposition Park). Los Angeles Harbor is the busiest on the West Coast. Many more financial institutions call Los Angeles home.

And lest we forget the motion picture, television and recording industries, Los Angeles is home to more studios than anywhere else in the world.

By the way Mr. Simmons, when was the last time San Francisco put on the Olympics? (Los Angeles put on two Olympics, and both were successful).
