More than $1.6 million in private foundation grants have been made to the the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at UC San Diego for research, publication and seminar activities.

The center this week announced receipt of $600,000 from the MacArthur Foundation of Chicago, $550,000 from the Ford Foundation of New York, and $525,000 from the Hewlett Foundation of Menlo Park.

The MacArthur grant was the first ever made by that foundation to the center. The Ford Foundation previously donated $630,000 to the 7-year-old center and the Hewlett Foundation $660,000.

The center has received more than $6.3 million in private funds and $1.2 million in public monies since it began, enabling it to sponsor several research scholars each year, as well as publish monographs and papers and hold summer seminars for journalists and leaders concerning U.S.-Mexico problems.

Part of the Ford Foundation grant will be used to study the effects of the new U.S. immigration law that became effective this year.
