Maywood : Condemnation for Motel

Share

The Maywood City Council, acting as the Redevelopment Agency, has adopted a resolution establishing the city’s intent to condemn property at 5445 Cudahy Ave. to make way for a 37-unit motel.

Ron Lindsey, director of building and planning, said the city will continue to negotiate for purchase of the property, which contains a vacant plumbing supply store. In September, the council selected Maywood Inn Partnership as the developer for the site. The motel, almost a mile away from the Long Beach Freeway, will be a TraveLodge.

Property owner Ron Fick, who protested the action, said he thinks his property is “being taken away from me.” He said he was offered $225,000 for the property by the developer, but turned it down because “it’s worth more than that.”

Lindsey said the city gave Fick an opportunity to develop the property himself, but rejected his proposal because it was incomplete.
