San Diego police Wednesday arrested a 41-year-old New Mexico prison escapee who may have been involved in several bank robberies in California and New Mexico, police said.

The FBI was questioning the man in connection with the robberies, police said. The FBI could not be reached for comment.

The suspect was identified as Antonio Gutierrez, 41, of Albuquerque, N.M. Gutierrez, who was wanted for robbery and prison escape charges in New Mexico, had been staying in a hotel near downtown San Diego, according to police.

Gutierrez is a suspect in the Feb. 23 robbery at the Bank of America branch on Palm Avenue in La Mesa. Authorities would not say how many other robberies Gutierrez is being questioned about.

Acting on a tip, city police arrested Gutierrez without incident at 4:45 p.m. in the vicinity of 25th Street and Imperial Avenue, near downtown. After questioning by the FBI, Gutierrez was expected to be transferred to the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center.
