OTHER SPORTS : Valley-Area Trio Lead No. 2 UCLA in Softball
The UCLA women’s softball team, led by three players from the Valley area, is ranked second in this week’s NCAA Division I poll behind Cal State Fullerton ??The Bruins are 14-0.
UCLA’s top pitcher is sophomore Samantha Ford, formerly of Hart High, who is 4-0 and has 53 strikeouts without allowing an earned run in 30 innings this season.
Gina Holmstrom, a senior first baseman from L.A. Baptist, leads the team with a .462 batting average.
Sophomore Karen Walker, an all-conference second baseman as a freshman, is third in batting with a .444 average. Walker, 1985 City Co-Player of the Year at El Camino Real, batted .315 as a freshman.
Kingpin: Cal Lutheran’s softball team (6-4) won the Redlands tournament last weekend with a 4-1 record. The Regals beat Redlands, 5-3, for the championship Sunday. Pitcher Kim Peppi (3-1) picked up three of the team’s wins. The senior has an earnedrun average of 1.37 and is hitting .324.
