Santa Monica : Warning on Alcohol OKd

Share

The City Council Tuesday approved the first reading of an ordinance that would require bars and some restaurants to post signs warning pregnant women to avoid alcoholic beverages.

If the ordinance receives final approval next month, all businesses serving alcohol would be required to post signs near entrances and in restrooms that would read: “Pregnancy and alcohol do not mix. Drinking alcoholic beverages, including beer and wine, during pregnancy can cause birth defects.”

The city of Los Angeles passed a similar ordinance in July, 1986.

In 1981, the U. S. Surgeon General advised pregnant women not to drink alcohol.
