Local News in Brief : Simi Valley to Donate to Fund for Homeless

Share

Simi Valley City Council has agreed to contribute $10,000 to a program that loans money to homeless families, senior citizens and the disabled to help defray the cost of moving into new living quarters.

The council’s unanimous vote this week came after its staff presented a report on the more than 100 families believed to be either homeless or living in squalid conditions in Simi Valley.

Simi Valley’s Community Services Department, which wrote the report, concluded that the number of homeless people in the city is on the rise largely because rent increases have far outstripped increases in income in the city.

The council agreed to donate $10,000 to the Lease Assistance Revolving Loan Fund, which was established by the Commission on Human Concerns, a coalition of private and public officials that administers social-service projects in Ventura County.

The fund provides interest-free loans of up to $1,500 to senior citizens, the disabled and homeless families looking for a place to live.
