A police officer on suspension from the National City Police Department was arrested Friday on suspicion of burglary after a five-week investigation by San Diego and National City police.
Officer Eddie Herbert Smith Jr., 32, was booked at County Jail downtown after his arrest Friday near his North Park real estate office. He was arrested at 2:50 p.m. by officers from both departments, San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
Details about the case and the arrest were sketchy, and late Friday police from both agencies would only confirm that the burglary had occurred in San Diego.
Smith had been a San Diego policeman before switching to the National City force in 1985, said Robinson, who described him as a “fine beat officer.”
A warrant for Smith’s arrest was issue by Municipal Judge Joe Littlejohn, Robinson said. Bail was set at $10,000.
Smith was placed on suspension two weeks ago.
