Golf Roundup : Frost Takes Lead on Frosty-Morning 68

South African David Frost, heavily bundled against the early-morning chill, shot a three-under-par 68 and took over the second-round lead Friday in the $600,000 Bay Hill golf tournament at Orlando, Fla.

“It was very cold when we started,” Frost said. “I was wearing two sweaters and my rain suit.”

Frost, 27, a frequent contender but not yet a winner on the PGA Tour, had a 36-hole total of 135.

The 1986 South African Open champion made a 10-foot putt for par after missing the green on the 18th hole.

That left him one stroke in front of Tim Simpson (68) and Payne Stewart (67), who has had nine second-place finishes since his last victory in the 1983 Walt Disney tournament.

U.S. Open champion Ray Floyd pitched in for an eagle-3 in a round of 68 that put him two off the pace. He was tied with Curtis Strange, who birdied two of the last three holes for a 66.

Arnold Palmer, the 57-year-old tournament host, struggled to a 79 and a 156 total, failing to qualify for the final two rounds.

First-round leader Brad Faxon had a 76 and was at 142.

New Zealander Bob Charles shot an eight-under-par 64 to take the first-round lead in a PGA Senior tournament at Sun City West, Ariz.

His eight-birdie, no-bogey round over the Hillcrest Golf Course tied a record set in 1985 by Don January and matched last year by defending champion Charlie Owens, who had a 74 Friday. Chi Chi Rodriguez, Miller Barber and John Brue each shot a 65 to share second place.

Gay Brewer, Paul Harney and George Lanning were at 67.
