Kickers, Earthquakes Prepare for Rematch

The last time the California Kickers and San Jose Earthquakes met, it was the Kickers who did most of the kicking, smashing their northern rivals, 6-2, last July en route to the Western Soccer Alliance title.

The two meet again Sunday at Cal State Northridge’s North Campus Stadium at 3:15. It’s only the second match of the year for the Kickers, but they already enjoy a four-point advantage over the rest of the league because California’s 2-1 victory over the L.A. Heat last week remains the only WSA game played. Under WSA rules, teams get three points for a win and a point for each goal up to three.

Kicker midfielder Amir Darabi, a former member of the Iranian national team, scored both goals.

The Quakes’ strength is in their back line, where Player-Coach Barney Boyce is joined by veterans Robby Zipp and Joe Silveira.

Garza Enters Forum Boxing Tournament

Jaime Garza, the former World Boxing Council super-bantamweight champion, faces Joaquin Acuna (35-8-2) of Mexico on April 9 in a first-round match of a $100,000 featherweight tournament at the Forum. Acuna had been ranked as high as seventh by the World Boxing Assn. before he lost last July to Mauro Gutierrez.

Garza, a former Pacoima resident with a 44-2 record and 42 knockouts, was expected to be the tournament favorite. But that was before his upset loss to Darryl Thigpen in January. Thigpen knocked out Garza in the sixth round of a planned 10-round fight in Irvine.

The Garza-Acuna bout is scheduled for 10 rounds.
