College Roundup : Baca, Garcia Lead Fullerton Over TCU

Mark Baca scored twice in the first two innings on throwing errors and Longo Garcia threw a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 4-1 nonconference victory against Texas Christian University Friday on Titan Field.

After TCU scored in the first inning, Fullerton (16-9) rallied with three runs. Baca led off the first with an infield single, advanced to second on a wild pickoff throw by losing pitcher John Briscoe, stole third and scored on catcher Mike Cullen’s throwing error.

The Titans scored twice more on a run-scoring groundout by Mike Ross and an RBI single by Mark Razook. Baca doubled in the second inning, stole third and scored on Cullen’s second wild throw.

Garcia, who walked two, is 5-1. Briscoe (2-3) struck out 12 and allowed six hits. TCU is 14-11.

The three-game series ends today in a 1 p.m. game on Titan Field.

In nonconference baseball:

USIU 10, Chapman 9--Bob Esquerra of United States International University doubled in the winning run in the ninth inning for the victory at San Diego.

Pitcher Wally Trice (2-1) earned the victory for USIU (9-14), which was led by Kevin Robinson. He went 3 for 3 with five RBIs, including a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

Chapman (7-11) was led by Tony Gardea, who went 2 for 4, including a grand slam in the seventh. Pitcher David Bird (2-1) took the loss.

Cal State Long Beach 11, Southern California College 7--The 49ers scored two runs in the first inning and never trailed in a game at home. Jim Fryar had three hits to lead Long Beach, which was aided by four SCC errors. Pitcher Steve Overeem hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for SCC (6-13). Randy Frazier was 2 for 4 with one RBI Jeff Motske was 2 for 4.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Chapman 8, Biola 1-- Chapman (2-7) swept the doubles matches and won five of six singles matches in the victory at Biola.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 5, Columbia 4--The Anteaters, ranked 19th in the country, won the top three singles matches and hung on at UC Irvine against No. 22 Columbia.

Mark Kaplan defeated Phil Williamson, 6-3, 7-6. Kaplan, ranked No. 25 in the country, is 19-6. In No. 2 singles, Trevor Kronemann defeated Matt Litsky, 6-3, 6-2. Julian Barham defeated Keith Thomas, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, in No. 3 singles.

UC Irvine 6, Yale 3-- Kaplan defeated Bill Benjes, 6-2, 6-2, Kronemann, 19-8, defeated John Kim, 6-4, 7-6, and No. 5 Richard Lubner defeated Steve Donovan, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. No. 6 Mike Downs also won for UCI, defeating Todd Khoury, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1.

In nonconference men’s volleyball:

UC San Diego 3, Chapman 0--UCSD won 15-7, 15-4, 15-9 at La Jolla. Sean Hudson and Paul Miller had eight kills each for San Diego (14-13). Erich Schlitz and Jim Pagansapa had seven kills each for Chapman.
