Davis Cup Roundup : Seguso and Flach Win Doubles; U.S. Leads, 2-1

Robert Seguso and Ken Flach came from two sets down to win a four-hour match over Victor Pecci and Francisco Gonzalez Saturday night, pushing the United States to a 2-1 lead over Paraguay in opening-round Davis Cup matches at Asuncion, Paraguay.

The match was marred by several disturbances between fans at the Paraguay Yacht and Golf Club and the two U.S. players.

But Flach and Seguso, both 23, steadied themselves to score a 5-7, 9-11, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 victory.

At the end of the second set, Flach slammed a ball into the crowd near a man who was making cat sounds. Other fans began barking like dogs, and the umpire was forced to hush the crowd.

Flach also yelled at Gonzalez after a point, and the burly 31-year-old Paraguayan spat toward him from the other court.

After the match, however, the players shook hands, and the crowd gave them a round of applause.

Earlier, Pecci pulled Paraguary even with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Jimmy Arias. The match was tied, 3-3, in the third set when it was halted at midnight Friday.

At Adelaide, Australia, Pat Cash and Peter Doohan downed Yugoslavia’s Slobodan Zivojinovic and Igor Flego, 9-11, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, to give defending champion Australia a 2-1 lead.

Australia won the second set despite appeals from the Yugoslavs that Flego was called for a foot-fault on a second serve at set point.

At Barcelona, Boris Becker and Eric Jelen beat Emilio Sanchez and Sergio Casal of Spain, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, giving West Germany a 2-1 lead.

Earlier in the day, Casal completed a 6-4, 6-8, 7-9, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jelen. The match was halted by darkness Friday.

At Prato, Italy, Mats Wilander and Anders Jarryd defeated Paolo Cane and Simone Colombo, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, in 1 hour 12 minutes to give Sweden a 2-1 lead.

In Hradec Kralove, Czechoslovakia, Miloslav Mecir and Tomas Smid kept the Czechs alive by defeating Israel’s Amos Mansdorf and Shlomo Glickstein, 6-2, 4-6, 8-6, 8-6. Israel leads, 2-1.

At Mexico City, Jorge Lozano and Leonardo Lavalle turned back Britain’s Jeremy Bates and Andrew Castle, 6-2, 6-1, 7-9, 6-2, to give Mexico an insurmountable 3-0 lead.
