NCAA DIVISION II SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS : Kubiak Wins His 5th Title; CSUN Men 3rd

Jeff Kubiak reacted angrily last year even after winning his third national title in record time.

The record simply was not fast enough.

Saturday night, on the final day of the NCAA Division II swimming and diving championships, Kubiak won his fifth national championship in the last two years.

And this time he slapped the water, waved his arms and shook his fists the way winners do.

Kubiak won the 200 breaststroke in 1:59.84, breaking his record of 2:00.40 last year. And in a relatively slow Belmont Plaza pool, that was as fast as anyone could have expected.

“All I was thinking about was breaking two minutes,” he said. “I was hoping I could go that fast, but I didn’t think I could.”

Kubiak, who was voted swimmer of the meet for the second straight year, and Coach Pete Accardy both estimated the time might have been in the 1:58 area in a faster pool.

But even Kubiak’s two wins in the four-day meet and a victory by John Morrison in the 1,650 freestyle Saturday could not keep the Northridge men’s team from slipping to third in the standings behind Cal State Bakersfield and Oakland, Mich.

Bakersfield defended the title it took from Northridge last year with 479.5 points. Oakland had 246 and CSUN had 237.5.
