PSA Offers Seniors a 15% Discount on Any Fare

PSA has designed a nice spring break for travelers 65 and older with a 15% discount on any fare.

The offer is valid through June 15 in all PSA markets on all flights, including, of course, the almost 200 flights a day in and out of five Los Angeles-area airports.

There are only two exceptions: Steamboat Springs, Colo., which has limited service that ends for the season in two weeks; and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Discounts there are subject to bilateral agreements between Mexico and the United States.

However, the discount is also available without any age restriction to any senior’s traveling companion, provided they fly together on all trips.

Smaller Break Later

After June 15 a 10% discount will go into effect for seniors and their traveling companions. This program has no expiration date, a company spokesman said.

“PSA’s program for seniors is by far the most generous on the West Coast,” said John Siefert, PSA vice president of marketing. “There are no fees, no clubs to join, no forms to fill out and no deeper discounts available.”

No reservations are required and there are no limitations on days or hours of travel, a company spokesman said. About the only requirement is that seniors have proof of age available.

American and Filipino veterans who served in Bataan and Corregidor during World War II might be interested in the special 10-day tour to that area of the Philippines put together by Mial Gan of L.A. Classic Holidays Inc.

A bit early, but the Bermuda Star Line has announced a 10% discount for seniors, 60 and older, on seven-day cruises from New York to Bermuda on sailings from Aug. 29 through Oct. 10.

The cruises normally run from $825 to $1,295 per person, double occupancy, depending on the season. The Bermuda Star, a 23,395-ton liner, will call at Hamilton and St. George’s while in Bermuda.

Only one person in a cabin need be 60 or over to qualify for the senior rate. Special group rates are also available for senior organizations and groups.

Interested in an outdoor adventure trip that doesn’t involve too much hiking, yet visits some of Western Canada’s most majestic scenery?

Harry Ellis, who runs Adventure Outdoors in Bainbridge Island, Wash., developed the idea after many requests from mature and retired travelers. He offers such a trip by van, limiting it to 15 people.

The seven-day tour leaves Seattle on Aug. 14 and goes first by ferry to Vancouver Island. Then it’s another ferry trip back to mainland British Columbia via the Inside Passage to Prince Rupert.

The tour then follows a spectacular route up to Bear Pass, with its 10 icefalls and glaciers. Dramatic Bear Glacier, Ellis says, is a photographer’s dream, with brilliant coloring and textures.

Follows Glacier Melt

The glacier melt forms the start of the Bear River, and the tour follows this to the sea at Stewart, where there is a long saltwater fiord called Portland Canal. It is the boundary there between the United States and Canada.

The van tour ends in Stewart after 870 miles. The cost, per person, double, is $439, which includes hotel accommodations and guide service, no meals. From Stewart, an additional $118 covers the return to Vancouver by air and connections for home.

Ellis also runs a variety of one- and two-day van and hiking tours in and around the Mt. Rainier-Olympic Peninsula area out of Seattle. These trips, which include hotel pickup and usually a barbecued salmon lunch, run from $35 to $50 per person, depending on the length of the tour.

In addition, Ellis offers brief to one-week backpacking tours for those “in reasonable condition.”
