Leftist guerrillas in El Salvador, responding to appeals from Roman Catholic Church leaders, freed two mayors they kidnaped two months ago, a church spokesman said. Father Jesus Delgado, a spokesman for the San Salvador archdiocese, identified the mayors as Jose Atilio Ascensio of San Agustin and Javier Osmin Cruz of San Francisco, two towns in Usulutan province. Both men belong to President Jose Napoleon Duarte’s centrist Christian Democratic Party. Delgado said the guerrillas turned over the hostages to Bishop Orlando Cabrera, whose diocese includes Usulutan.
