U.S., Turkey Extend Base Pact

The United States and Turkey today renewed a defense and economic assistance agreement that provides for U.S. military installations on Turkish soil through 1990.

Secretary of State George P. Shultz and Turkish Foreign Minister Vahit Halefoglu signed the pact at a State Department ceremony. Halefoglu urged the Administration to live up to a commitment to ask Congress for high levels of financial assistance to his country. Turkey has requested $1.2 billion in aid for the coming fiscal year. The Administration has asked Congress for $913 million.
