Pasadena : Theater Plans Dropped

Share

Escalating costs and engineering problems have forced the Board of Directors to abandon plans to build a movie theater in Old Pasadena.

The city had planned to build the theater under the city-owned Schoolhouse Block parking facility, now under construction at the corner of Raymond Avenue and Green Street. Many Old Pasadena business operators considered the proposed theater a cornerstone of redevelopment in the area.

But City Manager Don McIntyre said that because of unforeseen engineering and construction problems, the theater would have cost $500,000 to $700,000 more than originally planned, and could have caused serious structural damage to the historic Braley Building next door.

McIntyre said the city will use the theater area for additional parking spaces.
