Jim Bakker, whose wife recently admitted she had been a drug addict, resigned from the PTL Club television ministry and was replaced as chairman by the Rev. Jerry Falwell, founder of the Moral Majority. Falwell aides said the Virginia television evangelist took over as PTL chairman at the request of Bakker. Tammy Bakker admitted on a PTL program that she has been hospitalized for drug addiction since last year.
