John McEnroe, seeking to regain the form that made him No. 1 in the world, and Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia won quarterfinal matches Friday night in the $315,000 Dutch Open tournament at Rotterdam.

The 28-year-old McEnroe, playing better with each match, beat Amos Mansdorf of Israel, 6-4, 7-5. Mecir downed Jonas B. Svensson of Sweden, 6-2, 7-5. They will meet in today’s semifinals

McEnroe, playing with tendinitis and bursitis of the right hip, received three hours of heat treatments and medication during the day. Then he went out and broke Mansdorf in the first game of the match.

In the second set, McEnroe had to wait until the 11th game for the decisive break. He served for the match trailing, 15-40. But his fifth ace of the match and a serve-and-volley winner brought him to deuce. Two errors by Mansdorf ended the match.

“I am serving better now,” McEnroe said. “I seem to be more on top of things.”

McEnroe said he was looking forward to a tough match against Mecir, whose soft approach and cat-like quickness helped him defeat Ivan Lendl two weeks ago in the Lipton International tournament. Lendl replaced McEnroe as the top player in the world for the past two years.

Top-seeded Jimmy Connors cruised to a quarterfinal victory in the $315,000 Paine Webber tournament when a knee injury forced eighth-seeded Tim Wilkison to retire in the second set.

Connors was only one game away from victory anyway, having won the first set 6-2 and pulled to a 5-2 lead in the second. Wilkison injured his left knee early in the match when he crashed into the stands in pursuit of the ball.

In today’s semifinals, Connors will play fourth-seeded Brad Gilbert, who beat Marcel Freeman, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Connors, seeking his first tournament victory since October, 1984, said Wilkison gave him a thorough test even though the scores indicated otherwise.

“It might have looked easy, but I thought it was a pretty good battle out there,” Connors said. “I enjoy the way Tim plays. He hustles. You know you’ll never get a free point.”

Third-seeded Tim Mayotte swept past Paul Annacone, 6-1, 7-5, to also move into the semifinals. Mayotte will face South Africa’s Christo van Rensburg, who beat Derrick Rostagno, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5.

Chris Evert Lloyd easily defeated unseeded Stephanie Rehe, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals of the $250,000 Virginia Slims tournament at Dallas.

Evert Lloyd, the top-seeded player in the tournament, will play third-seeded Zina Garrison in today’s semifinals. Garrison beat Bettina Bunge, 6-3, 6-4.
