AFI FILM FEST: THE FINAL WEEK

T he following are capsule reviews of this week’s screenings at the AFI Film Festival of Los Angeles. Screenings take place at the Los Feliz Theater, 1822 N. Vermont Ave., Hollywood, except where noted. Tickets and information: (213) 520-2000 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. TUESDAY

“Cat City” (Hungary, 1986, 3 p.m.). The primal cartoon warfare between cat and mouse (the ultimate extension of which is Tom and Jerry) gets a dialectic twist and expansion in this animated feature from Hungary, directed by Bela Ternovszky. Here, cats are repressive warmongers, mice are persecuted “little guys” (with the exception of super-rodent Grabowski) and rats are sleazy killers-for-hire. The idea is amusing; the satire and character animation sometimes even more so. Much of this film’s appeal will be destroyed if it’s bought by an American company and dubbed into English (a definite possibility); its heart is the mix of American styles and Slavic accent. Recommended.
