“The Last Assault” (Romania, 1986, noon). The only difference between this handsome, old-fashioned, large-scale World War II epic and countless others is that it comes from Romania, a country whose cinema is virtually unknown in America. It has massively impressive battle scenes, a young wet-behind-the-ears but brave hero (George Alexandru), tear-jerking patriotism, sentimentality and cornball humor. Sergiu Nicolaescu’s direction is crisp and dynamic, but the film is too cliche-ridden to become involving.
