Share

Armed robbers took an unknown amount of jewelry Saturday from Rupert’s Diamond Palace in the 9800 block of Chapman Avenue in Garden Grove and fired a single shot when a gun apparently went off by accident, police said.

No one was injured as the “four or five” suspects fled in a brown Dodge van, Garden Grove Police Lt. John Urbanowski said.

At 4:05 p.m. the suspects entered the jewelry store, smashed cases and took an undetermined amount of jewelry, he said. As they climbed into a waiting van, a gun carried by one of the suspects discharged accidentally, witnesses told police.

The van fled northbound on the San Diego Freeway and was last seen by a Los Alamitos police officer traveling the opposite direction in the north Long Beach area, Urbanowski said.
