Sheriff’s deputies are investigating two unrelated shootings in Vista on Friday that left two men hospitalized, one of them in critical condition.

Deputies were called to an apartment in the 1400 block of Bonair Road at 2:30 p.m. by nearby residents who reported hearing a gunshot. Deputies found Daniel E. Escobar, 19, on the floor with a head wound.

Escobar’s roommate, Victor H. Vasquez, told deputies that the two men were handling a handgun that they thought was unloaded. Vasquez told deputies that when he pulled the trigger the gun discharged, striking Escobar.

In the second incident, deputies said that Francisco Arreolo, 26, was standing in the 300 block of West California Street about 6:20 p.m. when he was hit in the upper right arm and chest by a shotgun blast from a passing car.

Stephen Davidson, 35, was arrested and booked at County Jail in Vista on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the incident. According to sheriff’s investigators, the shooting stemmed from an argument between the two men.

Arreolo was flown by LifeFlight to Palomar Hospital, where he was listed in good condition Saturday.
