NCAA Men’s Division III : North Park Wins Another Title
Forward Michael Starks scored 30 points as fifth-ranked North Park of Chicago beat No. 7 Clark of Massachusetts, 106-100, Saturday night in the NCAA Division III championship game.
Starks, named the tournament’s most valuable player, scored 13 points as North Park took a 55-30 halftime lead and added 10 early in the second half to help the Vikings go ahead, 71-41.
Starks’ twin brother, Myron, scored 18 points for North Park.
Clark, which had committed 19 first-half turnovers, got rolling late in the second half. Junior guard Kermit Sharp scored 10 points in a span of 2:04 to get the Cougars within 91-79 with 5:09 left.
Sharp fouled out less than a minute later, but Clark continued the rally and chipped the deficit into single figures. Myron Starks made two free throws and a dunk in the final minutes to keep North Park safely ahead.
It was the fifth national title for North Park, which claimed three championships in 1978-79-80 and won another in 1985.
