A total of 2,546 customers in Rolling Hills Estates were blacked out for two hours Sunday night when a 20-year-old motorist slammed his vehicle into a 75-foot power pole, sending 16,000-volt transmission lines onto busy Hawthorne Boulevard, authorities said.

Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Ray McDermott said, “We had to really hurry up and get him out of the car, because we were afraid of the high tension lines touching him or us.”

The victim, whose identity was not released, was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center with a broken leg.

Sheriff’s Deputy Don Williams said the southbound lanes of Hawthorne Boulevard at Palos Verdes Drive would be closed until early today so that Southern California Edison crews could repair the lines.
