College Roundup : UCI’s Tennis Team Beats Fresno State in Final, 6-0

Mark Kaplan, UC Irvine’s No. 1 singles player, defeated John Lecler of Fresno State, 6-2, 6-2, to lead the Anteaters past the Bulldogs, 6-0, in the final of the UCI intercollegiate tennis tournament at Irvine Monday afternoon.

Kaplan, ranked 14th in the nation with a 21-6 record, defeated Sven Salumaa, 6-7, 6-4, 6-0, to lead Irvine over Indiana, 5-2, in a semifinal Monday morning. In the other semifinal, Fresno State defeated the University of San Diego.

Irvine was helped in the final by No. 2 singles player Trevor Kronemann (23-10), who defeated John Soto of Fresno State, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

The Anteaters (1-0, 16-8) play host to Utah Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

Cal State Fullerton is the No. 1-ranked team in the latest NCAA men’s gymnastics scoring poll, which is based on an average of a school’s top three home and two road scores.

The Titans (17-4) have posted the nation’s highest meet score this season (287 points) and have a 282.68 average. Oklahoma (282.51) is ranked second, followed by Penn State (281.16), UCLA (280.92), Nebraska (279.46), Iowa (279.34), Ohio State (278.29), Houston Baptist (277.90), New Mexico (277.79) and Illinois (277.40).

Fullerton scored 283.45 points to defeat California (279.60) and Stanford (274.40) in a tri-meet last Sunday at Berkeley. The Titans will next take part in the Pacific 10 invitationals in Palo Alto April 3. The NCAA championships will be held in Pauley Pavilion April 24-25.

In a nonconference softball doubleheader

Cal State Fullerton 7-7, University of Minnesota 0-2--Connie Clark (10-0) pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven in the first game for the Titans (19-2). Chenita Rodgers went 2 for 4 and scored two runs and Rina Foster went 2 for 4 with one RBI for Fullerton, the country’s top-ranked team.

In the second game, Janis Okerlund allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out two for the Titans. Teammates Kristine Glomboske went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and Lisa Baker went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Minnesota is 7-9.

In a Golden State Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader:

California Lutheran 4-6, Southern California College 2-3--Mike Lomeli went 3 for 5 with a single, a double and a home run and Matt Kanopsios had a double and a home run for the Vanguards in the first game at Southern California College.

Robert Mansfield (2-4) gave up five hits, four runs and struck out two in the first three innings. Steve Overeem relieved Mansfield in the third and gave up two hits and struck out one for SCC. Jim Duey gave up five hits and struck out four in seven innings for Cal Lutheran.

In the second game, Lomelli (5-4) gave up 11 hits, 6 runs and struck out 12 and went 2 for 3 with a home run and an RBI double for the Vanguards (4-4, 8-16).
