The Green Bay Packers are trying to trade wide receiver James Lofton before the April 28 National Football League draft.
Tom Braatz, the team’s director of football operations, said that Lofton, scheduled to go on trial May 18 on a charge of second-degree sexual assault, will not play for the Packers again. If Lofton is found guilty, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
“I think it was pretty much agreed upon . . . that it would be better for the state of Wisconsin, for James Lofton and for the Green Bay Packers if we mutually separated,” Braatz said.
Braatz said the Packers have been talking to the 49ers regarding Lofton, 30, who played for Coach Bill Walsh at Stanford.
The Raiders have also talked with the Packers about Lofton.
