N.Y. Pollution Deadline Unrealistic, Panel Told

WASHINGTON — New York City would not be able to meet a deadline for air pollution standards set under existing law even if all automobile traffic were banned, Sen. Alfonse M. D’Amato (R-N.Y.) said Friday.
D’Amato told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing that a Dec. 31, 1987, deadline for meeting ozone and carbon monoxide emission standards set under the Clean Air Act is unrealistic and should be changed.
The law calls for tough penalties--including cutting off sewage treatment grants and highway funds--against states and cities missing the deadline.
