UC Irvine has won a $1-million contract from the state to conduct a summer training program for junior and senior high school teachers.

Two hundred teachers from throughout the state will take part in the four-week Summer Technology Training Institute, designed to integrate technology with English, language arts, history and social science, said Carol Booth Olson, institute director and co-director of UCI’s Writing Project.

The institute’s focus will be on enabling teachers to prepare their students for the rapid technological changes occurring in the workplace, at home and in the political and social arenas, Olson said.

Teachers will work in teams and live on campus during the institute, from June 29 to July 24. They will attend individual and group sessions given by UCI faculty and guest consultants, work in the campus’ computing facility and observe sessions with students.

Participants also will develop lessons that use technology to enhance a specific objective in the teaching of writing, literature, history or social science, Olson said. The teachers will be expected to develop a plan to implement what they learn for use in their schools and districts, as well as to design a training program for other teachers.

The program is funded by the state Department of Education. Several follow-up sessions with teachers will be held on the campus during the 1987-88 school year.
