Z.T. Trumbo, Ex-Managing Editor of The Times, Dies at 85

Zachary Taylor Trumbo, 85, former managing editor of The Times, died Sunday at Wilcox Hospital on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, after a long illness.

A veteran of World War I, Trumbo worked for city wire services in Chicago and Los Angeles before joining The Times as a reporter in 1931. Appointed assistant city editor in 1941, he became city editor in 1957 and was named managing editor two years later, retiring to Hawaii in 1960.

His wife, former radio actress Georgia Fifield, died two years ago, just a few months short of their 50th wedding anniversary. He leaves a daughter, Phyllis von Stroheim; a stepson, Gary Fifield; two granddaughters, Vicki von Stroheim-Seay and Lori von Stroheim; a great-granddaughter and a great-grandson.
