Bid to Widen EPA Inquiry Fails
A special three-judge court rejected an independent counsel’s bid today to include two former top Justice Department officials in her investigation of the 1982 and 1983 withholding of EPA files from Congress.
The court’s ruling barred special prosecutor Alexia Morrison from broadening her inquiry to include allegations that former Deputy Atty. Gen. Edward C. Schmults and former Assistant Atty. Gen. Carol E. Dinkins misled the House Judiciary Committee. However, the court allowed Morrison to investigate, as a matter “related” to her initial inquiry, criminal allegations against Robert Perry, who was among 22 Environmental Protection Agency officials who resigned during the controversy that swept the agency.
