A 17-year-old high school student was killed Thursday when her car was hit by a van and then tumbled down an embankment in Rancho Santa Fe, authorities reported.

Amy Marie Watkins, a student at La Jolla Country Day School and a resident of Rancho Santa Fe, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:40 p.m. accident, which occurred on Via de la Valle, about a half mile west of Calzada del Bosque.

She was headed east on Via de la Valle in her late-model car when a van going the opposite direction crossed over into her lane on a sharp curve. The van, driven by David Smith, 20, of San Diego, hit Watkins’ car and sent it over the embankment.
