San Diego police found a small amount of chemicals used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine after a strong odor of ether from a motel room on North Harbor Drive led management and patrons to call police Thursday morning.

Narcotics Task Force detectives said two people, who were renting the room since the early morning, were arrested. Michael Wilson, 54, and Michael Galloway, 29, both of El Cajon, were being held on suspicion of manufacturing methamphetamine.

Police said the patrons and the manager of the Posada Inn smelled ether coming from one of the first-floor rooms about 6 a.m. Police were summoned and traced the odor.

The officers entered the room and discovered chemical glassware with liquid, some of which was ether, dripping from some of the formula containers, detectives said. The hazardous-materials unit from the Fire Department was called, and adjoining rooms were evacuated for about an hour, fire spokesman Larry Cooke said.
