NCAA Men’s Swimming Championships : USC Leads Meet; Biondi Sets American Record

California’s Matt Biondi set an American record of 19.15 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle Thursday at the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s swimming and diving meet, taking one-hundredth of a second off the record he had set earlier in qualifying. That effort beat his previous American mark of 19.22 set in 1986.

USC led after the first day of the three-day meet with 103 points, four more than second-place Stanford, the two-time defending champion. Florida was third with 80.

Stanford won the 400 medley relay in 3:12.05. Jay Mortenson led off by setting an American record of 47.94 in the 100 backstroke.

USC piled up points in the 500 freestyle when freshman Dan Jorgensen won in 4:16.25 and teammates Thomas Fahrner and Michael O’Brien, took second and third, respectively.
