NHL Roundup : Blues Beat Red Wings, Win Title

Defenseman Rob Ramage scored on a rebound 3:49 into overtime Sunday to give the St. Louis Blues the Norris Division title with a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings in the final regular-season game at Detroit.

After Red Wing goalie Greg Stefan stopped a shot by Gino Cavallini, Ramage rebounded the miss and fired the winning goal from the face-off circle to the left of the goal.

Doug Gilmour had given St. Louis a 2-1 lead with two goals in a 28-second span during the first minute of the third period. Detroit tied the game on a Dave Barr goal with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.

The win gave the Blues, who trailed the Red Wings by seven points just last weekend, a one-point margin over Detroit in the Norris Division race. St. Louis finished the regular season with a record of 32-33-15 and 79 points to Detroit’s record of 34-36-10 and 78 points.

“A week ago it didn’t look like we had a chance to win the division,” Gilmour said. “We really thought we were playing for second place.”

Chicago 5, Toronto 2--Denis Savard scored three goals for the Blackhawks, who earned a playoff spot with the victory at Chicago.

The Blackhawks moved ahead of the Maple Leafs into third place place in the Norris Division. Toronto and Minnesota finished the season tied at 70 points, but Toronto advanced based on more wins.

Montreal 8, N.Y. Rangers 2--The Canadiens won their ninth straight game as Kjell Dahlin scored three goals and John Kordic added two at New York.

The defending Stanley Cup champions will play Boston in the first round of playoffs, while the Rangers will play the Flyers.

Winnipeg 3, Calgary 1--Paul MacLean scored two goals to help the Jets defeat their first-round playoff opponent, the Flames, at Calgary.

Quebec 6, Boston 4--Lane Lambert, who had scored just four goals all season, scored three and Michel Goulet added two to lead the Nordiques at Boston.

N.Y. Islanders 9, Philadelphia 5--With the score 5-5, the Islanders scored four goals in the game’s final nine minutes at Philadelphia.

Washington 6, New Jersey 5--Lou Franceschetti scored 12 seconds into overtime to give the Capitals the win at East Rutherford, N.J.

Buffalo 6, Hartford 0--Six different players scored goals as the Sabres, last in the Adams Division, routed the first-place Whalers at Buffalo.

Hartford, which rested its top two scorers, Ron Francis and Kevin Dineen, attempted only 14 shots, making it easy for Sabre goalie Tom Barrasso to record his second shutout of the season.
