Laguna Beach : Lone Survivor of Crash Remains Very Critical

A woman who was involved in a weekend high-speed auto crash that killed three people was in “extremely critical” condition Tuesday at UCI Medical Center in Orange, a hospital official said.

Jeaneanne Peloquin, 33, who is the only survivor of the Sunday crash on narrow Laguna Canyon Road, 1 1/2 miles north of the El Toro Road junction, was treated for multiple fractures Monday but remained in the intensive care unit, hospital spokeswoman Dale Eastman said.

Laguna Beach Police Sgt. Danielle Adams said a traffic collision report scheduled to be released today will mention the cause of the accident. A toxicology report scheduled for next week will tell if alcohol or drugs were involved, Adams said.

The crash occurred on a straight stretch of road and not on one of the narrow curves where previous fatal accidents have taken place.

Peloquin’s husband, Wilfred, 43, of Dade City, Fla., was killed in the accident along with the driver of the second car, James G. Miceli, 29, and his passenger, Michael J. Conway ,31, both from Olathe, Kan.

Police have said that the accident occurred at 9:10 p.m. when Miceli lost control of his speeding sports car and swerved sideways into oncoming traffic. The car was hit broadside by Peloquin’s car, a rented 1987 Toyota.

The accident was the second one on the winding road over the weekend. Early Saturday morning, four teen-agers were injured when their car was hit head-on by a car driven by a drunk-driving suspect who police later arrested.

The most seriously injured of the four teen-agers, Mark Pavlinac, 17, was in guarded but stable condition Tuesday at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.
