Mount Angelus Stairways Turned Over to Residents

Share

The City of Los Angeles has turned over control of nine hillside staircases in the Mount Angelus neighborhood to homeowners and given them permission to gate and lock the concrete stairways.

By an 11-0 vote, City Council on Tuesday approved a measure long sought by some residents who said the staircases are hangouts for truants and hiding spots for burglars. However, other area residents opposed the measure, saying it would prove inconvenient to pedestrians.

Owners of properties adjoining the walks will be responsible for upkeep of the steps, but will be required to provide keys for the locks to the Police, Fire and Public Works departments as well as to utility companies.

Mount Angelus, a hilly area of mainly single-family homes, is in the Highland Park district, just within the elbow of where busy York Boulevard and Figueroa Street meet.
