San Diego’s warmer and clearer than usual weather will not carry over into the weekend, as a deepening marine layer brings late-night and early-morning low clouds and clear but cooler afternoons, the National Weather Service said.

“We will get a hint of June weather this weekend,” forecaster Wilbur Shigehara said. “May and June are the two cloudiest months of the year because of all the clouds during the night and morning hours, and this April weekend will resemble those months. However, the afternoons should be very pleasant and nice for all outdoor activities.”

The high temperature at Lindbergh Field reached 80 degrees on Thursday, 10 degrees short of the record but significantly warmer than the 66-degree norm. However, highs will return to near-normal levels today and remain there through the weekend.

“The deepening marine layer will bring the sea breezes that’ll come in and slam down the high temperatures,” Shigehara said. “It will be breezy along the coast and in the inland valleys, with the gustier winds in the mountains and deserts.”

Coastal Cooling

Temperatures along the coast will show the most cooling today, as highs plunge about six or seven degrees, with another three- or four-degree drop expected over the weekend. Inland highs will cool down about three or four degrees today and another six to eight degrees Saturday.

“The cooling won’t reach the inland areas east as much (today), but by Saturday all areas will be affected,” he said.

Coastal highs will range from 69 to 74 today, cooling to the high 60s Saturday and the mid 60s Sunday. Overnight lows will be in the mid 50s.

This week’s warm weather did not warm up the ocean; its temperature remains a steady 59 degrees. The surf will be between three and four feet.

Inland areas will have highs in the 80- to 88-degree range today, dipping into the high 70s Saturday and the mid 70s on Sunday. Lows will remain in the upper 40s and low 50s.

Mountain areas will have highs between 66 and 72 degrees today, decreasing to the mid 60s by Saturday and Sunday as the winds increase. Lows will be in the upper 30s and low 40s all three days.

Desert highs will be in the mid to upper 90s today, cooling to the low 90s on Saturday and the upper 80s by Sunday. Overnight lows will range from 55 to 62.

“It won’t be the absolute best weekend in San Diego, but it still should be pretty terrific after the night and morning low clouds clear out,” Shigehara said. “At least we won’t be getting any of those strong winds or storms that we’ve had a lot of weekends lately.”
