Orange County College Baseball : Titans Hit 9 Homers to Win, 24-10

Cal State Fullerton batters hit a single-game college-record nine home runs, including four in the fourth inning Friday night, to defeat Nevada Las Vegas, 24-10, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball game at Las Vegas.

Fullerton trailed, 4-3, coming into the fourth when Mike Ross, Tony Trevino and Keith Kaub hit consecutive home runs.

Andy Mota, the next hitter, was hit by a pitch. A bench-clearing fight followed, and left fielder Greg Mannion of Fullerton was ejected.

Ken Garcia then hit a two-run home run for the Titans, who scored eight runs in the inning. Garcia also hit his third home run of the season in the sixth. He was 2 for 2 with four RBIs, was walked four times and also was hit by a pitch.

Jim Osborn, Mannion, Mike Ham and Mark Razook also hit home runs for the Titans, who had 20 hits.

Gary Buckles (3-1) replaced starter Longo Garcia in the third inning and shut out Las Vegas the rest of the way for the victory.

It was the fourth consecutive PCAA victory for the Titans (6-1, 27-12), who swept Cal State Long Beach last weekend. Las Vegas falls to 4-3 and 21-13.

The teams play the second game of the three-game series tonight at 7, and the series concludes with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.

In other PCAA play:

UC Irvine 9, Cal State Long Beach 2--Junior right-hander Craig Brink (6-3) pitched a complete-game four-hitter at Long Beach. It was his fourth straight complete game and his sixth straight victory.

Irvine catcher Doug Kline was 3 for 4 with an RBI, and Jeff Oberdank, Mike Sugar, Chris Gallego and John Seeburger each had two hits in the Anteaters’ 15-hit attack.

Chad Holmes (1-5) took the loss for Long Beach (1-6, 10-30-1). Irvine is 4-3 and 17-18-1.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play:

Chapman 12, Cal Poly Pomona 7--Darren Nelson drove in two runs with a seventh-inning double to break a 7-7 tie and give the Panthers (6-4, 18-7) the victory at Hart Park.

Nelson, a senior outfielder, has 50 RBIs in 35 games this season and was 3 for 5, extending his hitting streak to 17 consecutive games.

The Broncos took a 5-1 lead after three innings, but Chapman came back to tie the score, 5-5, with two in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth. Cal Poly’s Miccal Jackson hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh, but the Panthers came back with six runs on five hits, a walk and a hit batter in the seventh.

Bryan Beals was 2 for 5 with a double and three RBIs, and Jim Areias was 2 for 2 with two walks, three stolen bases and four runs scored.
