Kickers Conclude Trip in Seattle

The California Kickers, leading the Western Soccer Alliance with a 4-1 record and 21 points, conclude a four-game road trip tonight against the Seattle Storm in Memorial Stadium. The Kickers played at F.C. Portland on Friday night.

Under WSA scoring rules, a team receives three points for a win and one point for each goal up to a maximum of three per game. Watts, Burnham in Arcadia Invitational

Quincy Watts of Taft and Angela Burnham of Rio Mesa highlight the list of local athletes entered in tonight’s Arcadia Invitational at Arcadia High.

Watts, the defending state champion in the 200-meter run, will compete in the 100- and 200-meter runs and the 400- and 1,600-meter relays. Burnham, who last year became the first freshman girl ever to win the state 100-meter run, is entered in the 100- and 200-meter runs and the 400-meter relay.

In other meets, Cal State Northridge and Cal Lutheran will compete at the Northridge Invitational at CSUN and more than 600 high school athletes have entered the Van Nuys Rotary meet at Birmingham High in Van Nuys. Both meets begin at 9 a.m. NOTABLE

Jack W. Keating of North Hollywood scored a hole-in-one on the 96-yard fourth hole of the Van Nuys Executive golf course Friday, one day before his 80th birthday.

Burbank High softball pitcher Debbie Day has signed a letter of intent with the University of Texas-Arlington. Day (10-1) was also being recruited by Oklahoma, Northeast Louisiana and Iowa.

Four of the six junior college transfers who signed to play football at Cal State Northridge have left the team.

Eric Staggs, a 6-7, 280-pound offensive tackle from Sierra College is the latest to leave. He was a projected starter. Mario Napili, a tailback from Sierra, Sean Williams, a defensive tackle from Glendale College, and Scott Crane, a linebacker from Scottsdale, Ariz., have also left the squad.

Crane, a 6-3, 240-pound JC All-American, returned home temporarily for “personal reasons.” He is expected back in the fall.

Center Scott Hughes, a starter at Wichita State who transferred to CSUN when that school dropped its program, has told Northridge Coach Bob Burt he will redshirt this season.
